The Finnish municipal elections were held yesterday, and I got to vote in Finland for the first time. Although I'm not a citizen, I've been a resident of Rovaniemi for over 4 years (seven, actually), which entitles me to vote in municipal elections. Within Finland's electoral system small parties actually have a chance, so I was able to vote Green for the first time in my life, with an actual chance of it meaning something. In the end, my candidate didn't get into Rovaniemi's 51-seat council, but there was enough Green party support to elect three other candidates, so my vote wasn't wasted in any case. I just read that B.C. is considering switching to a Single Transferable Vote system, which might mean I could actually support Green candidates in if I ever return to Vancouver.
