Yacht Rock

Perusing the info on the new Pitchfork 500 book, I noticed a reference to sidebars that included 'Yacht Rock'. Whatever could the musical genre of 'Yacht Rock' be, and how had I missed this seemingly essential cult reference. Peeling off the layers of the Yacht Rock oevre (the smoooooothest sounds of late 70s soft rock) revealed the golden nugget of the Yacht Rock series on Channel101. The homemade show is features a 'bad on purpose' style, but its lowbrow humour reveals some amazing interweaved connections between Yacht Rockers like Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross and Hall & Oates. Truly inspired. Now excuse me, while I get back to my smooth tunes.

Cooking with Coolio

It looks like I'm not the only one combining an interest in music and cooking. I give you... Cooking With Coolio on My Damn Channel. Featuring mood music, disco balls, dancers/ho's and recipes such as Soul Rolls and Swashbucklin' Shrimp, how has this priceless piece of entertainment passed me by until now? My favourite touch is Coolio's eschewing standard cooking measures in favour of 'half a dime bag of Seasoning Salt'.

Prince has roots in Lapland?

According to this morning's Lapin Kansa, the Artist formerly currently known as Prince is one-quarter Finnish, with his grandmother (Hilda Romppainen) coming from the tiny village of Näätämö in Inari, Lapland. Let's go crazy. The article claims that Hilda moved to Minneapolis where she gave birth to a boy believed to be Prince's real father (the article doesn't name him or go into details, but presumably Prince's father wasn't around for parenting duties). There are now plans to invite Prince to Inari to visit his roots. I can't find any other articles on the Net about this yet (Finnish or English), but I'll keep an eye out. In the meantime, here's a scan I made of the article (in Finnish). UPDATE (05.07.06): Lapin Kansa printed a kind of retraction of this story today. It seems the story started as an April fools joke in a Finnish-language newsletter in Minnesota, that was picked up by a local paper (as fact) that was on their email list. Nice fact checking by all involved. :)

Anyway, here's a few links to coverage of this story: PrinceFams HouseQuake Hajanaisia mietteitä PoikaKuoro

Cure for Grey Hair?

GrecianFormulaCan this really be true? A cure for grey hair? L'Oreal has apparently discovered a way to 'switch on' the cells that switch off that turn our hair grey. No more colouring. Only a no-doubt pricey drug and your own natural hair colour back. I've had a patch of grey ever since I was about 17, but have noticed I'm going more and more grey now. The colour I can probably live with, but the "new" grey hair seems to be more wirey. Maybe the new drug makes the hair soft and luxuriant too?

Russian twin?

Russian twin?I must have one of those totally generic faces, because my friends keep finding twins and doppelgängers of me all over the internet. Now from what I gather is a Russian mobile phone or internet provider ad, comes this latest one. So, to those who know me, what do you think? A perfect likeness? And to my Russian-speaking friends, what am I saying to that woman?

Antarctic Liberation Army?

Anyone who has gone through US airport security lately knows how ridiculously overzealous they can be. But for the love of all that is sane and holy, WTF are they doing making fricking penguins go through a metal detector? This is like a really-and-for-true news story when penguins from Sea World were visiting Denver. (I didn't know Sea World was owned by Anheuser Busch, but I guess it doesn't surprise me).
